In 1961, James Baldwin and The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad met in Chicago to discuss the path to Black freedom and the future of America. In their spirit, we will meet together in Philadelphia in 2024. In partnership with Muhammad Mosque 12 of The Nation of Islam, we will screen our new original documentary, ‘To Fulfill the Unfulfilled, To Answer the Unanswered: The Revolutionary James Baldwin,’ followed by a roundtable discussion and people’s dialogue.
The documentary seeks to clarify the revolutionary chronology that leads to Baldwin's theorizing, and to establish him as a revolutionary thinker who cannot be separated from Martin Luther King Jr. and the Black Freedom Movement. In doing so, the film addresses the American nation as it is locked in the throes of multifaceted crisis: unprecedented poverty, homelessness, and suffering, the destruction of our cities and community institutions — coupled with the ever-present shadow of war — together loom over the land. In these times, it is the people who must take up the revolutionary task of fulfilling the promise of the Black Freedom Movement, and completing its democratic, revolutionary, and emancipatory struggle to transform the American people and thus achieving a new nation. |
